Lucra Sports - Earnings+More Startup Focus

Startup Focus – Lucra Sports

Worth a Luc: The company’s two founders Dylan Robbins, CEO, and Michael Madding, COO, met 10 years ago when they both worked at Goldman Sachs. They spent their free time together watching and playing sports, keeping a running note on their phones of their friendly side bets.

  • But, says Madding, “we wanted instant settlement of our bets, we wanted complete control to customize the odds and spreads, and we wanted a lifelong scoreboard (to see who had ultimate bragging rights on and off the [golf] course).”

So, in 2019, they started Lucra, which now employs 15 people remotely across the US.

  • “Lucra is a social-gaming product where friends can challenge friends on the professional sports they watch and the recreational games they play,” explains Madding.

  • They launched the product in 2021 and achieved 50k active customers and ~$15m in handle.

  • Everything on Lucra is user-generated. “Pick the player or game to compete on and set the terms of the wager.”

  • As a skill-based game, Lucra can operate in 44 states, covering 95% of the US population.

  • “Last summer, we evolved the business from B2C to B2B2C, and built a SDK (software development kit) that allows enterprise clients to integrate our technology and offer natively it to their customers inside their existing platform,” Madding adds.

Lucrative: In Mar22, they raised $10m via a Series A, led by Raptor Group, SeventySix Capital and Victress Capital, as well as Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry, professional tennis player John Isner and NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Luc out: “There is a unique market opportunity in the B2B software space within the wagering ecosystem,” Madding claims. With the “intense focus” from the market leaders on D2C, it “leaves an open door for Lucra to differentiate itself from the competition.”

  • There has been “overwhelming positivity and interest in the B2B vertical”, he says. with seven deals signed in three months, including with Major League Pickeball and TennisONE (see below); six-figure to multi-million-dollar upfront fees; massive market demand for what we are building; and a pipeline of 600 names and growing.

  • “Each deal will generate $1m+ of revenue over their 2-3-year deal length,” he adds.

Luc to the future: The company says revenue last year increased 5x to $500k. Over the next 1-2 years Lucra’s goals include becoming “ubiquitous as the white-label software provider for real-money gamification”.

Growth company news

Acing it: The TennisONE app has added real-money contests to its offering in time for the 2024 Australian Open, which got underway yesterday. Thanks to a new partnership with Lucra (see above), fans will be able to bet against each other without the need for a bookie.

  • “It will be a game changer for tennis fans,” said Lucra investor and former tennis pro John Isner.

Diamond Kinetics and Marucci Utilize Analytics in new Smart Bat

Diamond Kinetics and Marucci Utilize Analytics in new Smart Bat

Data and analytics continue to be a driving force in baseball. While we see it at the major-league level, it doesn’t start there.

Marucci and Diamond Kinetics teamed up to create its newest product: The Marucci CATX Smart.

Imagine combining a sweet bat and the numbers behind a comfortable swing to show what you’re able to perfect. “Most importantly, for us, the ability not just to create data, but then it’s, ‘What do you do with that data?'” CJ Handron, Co-Founder and CEO of Diamond Kinetics, told The Comeback.

It’s a first-of-its-kind bat with a limited release. What makes it unique?

Well, the performance alone of the bat gives the hitter a smooth swing, but with a little bit of extra incentive: An ability to gather performance data all within the DK app. It’s also the first smart bat to be sanctioned and approve by the United States Specialty Sports Association for in-game use.

The app itself hopes to show data that will “visualize swing metrics across aspects of power, speed, quickness, and control, as well as monitor their progress from practice swings to live in-game at-bats, and enjoy interactive games and training content.”

This isn’t the first time Marucci has introduced data into their product. “Marucci leverages data from various sources to inform the design and construction of our bats, to ensure our products are at the forefront of innovation and performance,” Marucci Sports CEO & Co-Founder Kurt Ainsworth told The Comeback. “We gather data and analytics from the field, our in-house test lab, and our Baseball Performance Lab. This diverse, widespread collection allows us to design for different levels of play, bat compositions, performance certification limits, and hitter types.”

Those using the end cap won’t notice a difference, either — making the measurements more accurate. There’s no added weight or bulk. They don’t discredit the eye-test, however, but this data could enhance that. It enables certain strategic decisions for a player. “We’ve been at this for some time, and we’ve worked from the highest level of the game with MLB teams, a number of college programs, scouting and recruiting,” Handron said.

“We’ve experienced this where, if you are working closely with a coach who, you know, maybe is interpreting data for you, they’re using data to try to develop a personalization plan for you or identify a weakness and try to put either some awareness to that weakness in front of the player or more interestingly, a set of drills or a development plan,” Handron added. They appreciate an additional resource, as well.

The bat was available for purchase on Dec. 6 through the Marrucci website with a wider release in 2024.

Asensei Adds Cloud Coach, a Potent Tech Tool for Connected Fitness

Asensei Adds Cloud Coach, A Potent Tech Tool for Connected Fitness

Fitness companies can use Cloud Coach to analyze workout videos, enabling form-tracking and rep-count solutions.

Asensei, a tech company specializing in technique coaching and skill-based learning for sports and fitness brands, has introduced Cloud Coach to enhance the capabilities of sports and fitness videos and bring advanced solutions for connected fitness companies.

The Cloud Coach leverages Asensei’s software development kit (SDK), which debuted an extended reality (XR) extension this year.

While Asensei has laid the groundwork for fitness and health developers to bring virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences to consumers, its latest tool looks to tackle fitness and sports footage with leading methods — and create new opportunities.

Connected Fitness Solution

Cloud Coach offers an easy solution for quickly processing video uploads, effortlessly managing multiple feeds from several cameras on a game field or court, with the ability to splice footage to remove extraneous content. The new Cloud Coach can generate real-time data insights for sports broadcasts, but can also be highly useful in a connected fitness context.

Asensei’s movement recognition processor can detect multiple movements in video footage at unspecified times. Connected fitness companies can use Cloud Coach to analyze videos, annotating them with metadata that indicate which specific exercise is being performed and timestamps when the exercises start and stop, which can power form-tracking and rep-count solutions. This is especially helpful for connected fitness brands with large content libraries.

For fitness or sports activities that don’t require real-time feedback, the Cloud Coach can provide mid-practice or post-practice analysis, providing coaching insights to players or coaches after a simple video upload. A training journal capability is also available, where users can upload videos to receive comprehensive post-workout feedback on performance and progress.

Asensei allows connected fitness companies to pilot its capabilities without integrating the software kit by uploading video to its Computer Vision Processor Input for post-workout analysis.

Fitness Brands Tap Asensei

The tech company recently partnered with Centr, the health and wellness platform founded by actor Chris Hemsworth, to create artificial intelligence-driven connected fitness experiences using computer vision that recognizes human movement. Asensei’s technology will help develop a new product for the health and wellness platform.

Asensei’s movement-capturing, VR/AR and connected fitness innovations have also attracted other fitness clients such as Vertimax, PowerBlock, Litesport, Fittar, Bhout and Alter.

From Double Faults to Serving Success: Lucra Teams Up with TennisONE

From Double Faults to Serving Success: Lucra Teams Up with TennisONE

Tennis is freakin’ tough. Yet, 26 million Americans play recreationally, just as many as golf. And 90M Americans watch professional tennis. That’s one in four people!

From McEnroe, Sampras, and Agassi to Billie Jean, Serena, and Coco, the US has dominated world tennis for decades. Of course, we'd be remiss to not mention The Big Three, Alcaraz, and so many other international stars that have won titles and gifted us with scintillating performances.

What’s crazy though, is that until now, fans have never been able to challenge each other to predict player performances and outcomes. How many times have you sat in the stands or sunk into your couch, trying to guess who’s going to win more points, serve more Aces, or commit more double faults?

Until today, fans were restricted to handshake wagers, transacted via Venmo, or bet a “I’ll buy you a beer” that never was paid out. That offline behavior is being brought online.

We are thrilled to announce Lucra’s partnership with TennisONE App, who will integrate our technology to propel its mobile platform to new heights, allowing fans to challenge each other to real-money contests on ATP, WTA, and Grand Slam tournaments! TennisONE is the global hub for all tennis fans, serving nearly one million fans across the world.

By leveraging Lucra's technology, TennisONE will expand its functionality, allowing US-based users to participate in real-money contests related to their favorite tennis tournaments and players. Lucra will help TennisONE to foster social connectivity, strengthen customer loyalty, and unlock new revenue streams.

With this announcement, Lucra is also officially launching its professional sports Software Development Kit (SDK) to provide enterprise partners a secure and trustworthy real-money gamification engine. This innovative SDK will revolutionize the sports industry by allowing fans to compete against each other for real money inside platforms familiar to them.

First stop? The Australian Open. While the water may spin backwards there, we’re looking forward to riding the waves of this Grand Slam with a splash of skill and a sprinkle of luck.

Sports Business Journal names Quintar a Power Player in Fan Experience Technology

POWER PLAYER: QUINTAR

Sankar Jayaram
Chief Executive Officer
Jeff Jonas
President

Quintar
Sankar Jayaram and Jeff Jonas are longtime veterans of extended reality and noticed a clear opening in the space: A demand for quality content that had both utility and entertainment value. Jayaram and Jonas, both formerly of Intel Sports, developed Quintar as a way to boost the in-venue fan experience by providing a second-screen experience to go along with live action. Quintar’s partnership with the PGA Tour, which has incorporated Quintar’s software development kit into the tour app, allowed the company to support 12 events this year by letting fans see shot-tracking views through their mobile devices. Quintar also partnered with AT&T for an XR experience in the G League that gave fans a stat-centric view that they could customize to their preferences.

Power Players: Fan Experience Technology
The biggest movers and shakers in Fan Experience Technology

The connection between teams and their fans has far transcended the days of ushering people to their seats so they can cheer for their favorites. With so many touchpoints to create a well-rounded fan experience, professional sports organizations have learned to cater to their loyalists — both in-venue and afar — through an arsenal of technology tools and partners to continue fostering that ongoing relationship.Sports Business Journal recognizes 41 people spanning 26 organizations who continue to push game day into new and exciting phases. The list includes companies that boost in-person attendance with augmented reality. Others enhance the digital presentation with data-infused productions or create more personalized activations. They bolster the mobile experiences that fans enjoy while engaging with their teams and turn venue navigation into a more streamlined (and pleasant) place for consumers. They are also the sports leagues themselves, tending to their most valuable assets to keep them returning.

NCAA President Sounds Alarm on Gambling

Las Vegas tech firm, U.S. Integrity, works to combat illicit college sports betting: "How much bigger do we get than a starting quarterback?"

It's impossible to watch sports on television or online today without seeing ads for online gambling. Betting on sports has become a huge business, with the American Gaming Association saying that more than $93 billion was spent on sports gambling just last year.

As that number continues to grow, so do the scandals. A string of incidents in college sports this year is raising questions about the impact of gambling on college athletes' integrity.

When the Iowa Hawkeyes took on the Iowa State Cyclones in September, it was five players not taking the field who made some of the biggest headlines. All five, including Iowa State's star quarterback, were sidelined and dealing with criminal betting charges. Some had even bet on their own teams — something that Matt Holt, the operator of Las Vegas-based tech firm U.S. Integrity, said "just can't happen."

U.S. Integrity has been retained by all the major college conferences and nearly every sports league in the country. It's the watchdog guarding against illicit betting on games and making sure everything is done fair and square.

"I think Iowa and Iowa State was a huge eye opener," Holt said. "How much bigger do we get than a starting quarterback?"

However, this wasn't the first time U.S. Integrity realized something was amiss. Months earlier, the company had noticed something fishy about the bets placed on a University of Alabama baseball game. Holt alerted state regulators, and in May, the school fired its baseball coach because he allegedly helped an associate make bets against his team, in a game he was coaching. That, Holt said, was a "five-alarm fire."

U.S. Integrity Chief Operating Officer Scott Sadin has a background in the hedge fund world, where he analyzed Wall Street transactions to root out suspicious deals. Now, he does the same with sports data, watching "everything that has regulated sports wagering available on it" for anything alarming. The company focuses on betting lines, odds, social media posts and more to try and spot suspicious behavior. The company's most common concern is gamblers trading on inside information. If they find something alarming, they alert leagues, state regulators and the NCAA.

"Around 15 to 20 notifications go out to sports book operators and regulatory offices a month," Sadin said. There are 363 Division 1 teams in college basketball alone, 10 times as many as in the National Football League or National Basketball Association, meaning that Holt, Sadin and their teams have their hands full.

College sports have had gambling scandals over the decades, but the spread of online gambling makes them even more prevalent. One Division 1 athletic director told CBS News that he and his colleagues are "on pins and needles" and "scared to death" because of the recent scandals.

NCAA president Charlie Baker described the threat to the integrity of college sports as "extremely prevalent."

"The fact that it is now, you know, on your phone, you don't have to go somewhere to bet, you can do it anytime you want, I think it's a real challenge, not just for us, but for student athletes," Baker said.

Holt said that he hears such sentiments often.

"They could have happened anywhere," Holt said. "How could I ever say that I don't think it's happening? Because the proof recently shows someone dug in that well, and there was water."

Web3 Pro Closes New Funding Round in Further Sign of Digital Ads Upheaval

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- As privacy concerns and weakening marketing performance erode traditional online advertising, Web3 Pro, a leading MarTech SaaS company built around targeted opt-in marketing, closed a substantial round of fresh funding from P101, one of the largest European venture investors, bringing the total raised to date to almost $10MM, with a post money valuation of $57MM.

Marketers are moving quickly to retool their efforts now that Google is planning to eliminate third-party tracking cookies in its dominant Chrome browser in 2024. The decreasing advertising effectiveness of social media has further increased urgency.

"There is a seismic shift towards engaging, 1-1 marketing experiences that consumers enjoy and brands find extremely effective," says Christian Ferri, Web3 Pro's founder and CEO. "We're delighted that our enterprise-grade platform has found such success with marketers and now has the strategic support of P101 and its vast network of European enterprise brands."

After years of building bespoke marketing campaigns for companies including Lamborghini, Juventus, RM Sotheby's, Showtime Sports and Ducati, and others, Web3 Pro recently launched the Hub, a platform that gives companies self-serve access to some of the most powerful marketing tools available anywhere, all for a low monthly SaaS fee.

"As the leading investor in Web3 Pro's venture round, we are delighted to support their revolutionary marketing SaaS solution designed for enterprises", said Andrea Di Camillo, founder and managing partner of P101. "In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, harnessing the power of web3 technology is paramount. Web3 Pro has showcased a remarkable ability to merge innovation with practicality, offering a transformative solution that aligns seamlessly with the future needs of businesses. We commit to support Christian Ferri and the Web3 Pro team to develop the European market and those industries that are well established here."

P101 currently manages over $400 million in assets across 4 funds, and has backed companies including Fatmap (acquired by Strava) and Musixmatch, which completed a successful exit in 2022. P101 is one of the largest investor groups in southern Europe.

Existing investors of Web3 Pro include Sumitomo Corporation's CVC arm, Presidio Ventures, Seventy-Six Capital, River Capital Group, Ripple, and VU Ventures. Among its notable advisory board are Young Sohn, former President of Samsung Electronics and Gaetano Sciuto, former CEO of Giorgio Armani.

Based in Palo Alto, Calif., Web3 Pro provides a white-label SaaS MarTech solution that helps companies drive higher engagement, retention, and conversion, outperforming today's sub-par ads and loyalty programs by 3 to 5 times.

Proceeds from the new investment will be used to grow the sales and marketing division, including the expansion into Europe, MENA and APAC, which are centers of growing demand for new marketing engagement models.
