UBS Arena Joins the Boomerang Network to Enhance Customer Experience

UBS Arena Joins the Boomerang Network to Enhance Customer Experience

UBS Arena, the premier venue located in Elmont, NY, is renowned for hosting an array of spectacular events, from thrilling sports games to electrifying concerts and special events. As the home of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL), the arena seats 17,250 patrons for NHL games and up to 19,000 for special events such as performances by Drake, Bruce Springsteen, Zach Bryan, Cirque Du Soleil, and many more.

These events bring great excitement and energy, but they also lead to an inevitable consequence: a significant volume of lost items to manage. Historically, this created operational inefficiencies and challenges in delivering a customer experience that UBS Arena can be proud of. Recognizing the need for innovation, UBS Arena has found a cutting-edge solution by joining the Boomerang Network, ensuring that the process of recovering lost valuables becomes a premium experience.

By joining the Boomerang Network, UBS Arena is aligning itself with some of the country’s most innovative and customer-centric venues, including State Farm Arena, EnMarket Arena, Nissan Stadium, Acrisure Arena, the Cleveland Browns, and many more. This move underscores UBS Arena’s commitment to providing an exceptional customer experience.

“UBS Arena has quickly become one of the most marquee venues in the country since its opening in late 2021. The venue is stunning, and the team operating the venue are absolute rockstars. We are thrilled to be working with the UBS team to wow their customers by getting them back their lost valuables,” states Boomerang CEO, Skyler Logsdon.

Top 5 Trends in Sports Tech 2024 - Michael Schreiber

Top 5 Trends in Sports Tech 2024

Thanks to tech innovations, the world is shifting fast — not just in our daily lives but also in the sports we love.

IF YOU DON’T peg college students as gin drinkers, Snoop Dogg has some news. The rapper recently became the new title sponsor of the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl Presented by Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop (disclosure: we secured this partnership). But he was only approached to lend his name to the game after our insights team identified an unexpected stat: gin drinkers at sporting events are 47% more likely than the general population to be college sports fans.

The loosening of regulations by the NCAA to allow alcohol brand advertising is the least of the changes to fan engagement. Thanks to tech innovations, the world is shifting fast — not just in our daily lives but also in the sports we love. Better insights gleaned from fan data, greater convenience and more content are all on the table for the consumer. If there is a theme to the trends in sports tech in 2024, the old rules no longer apply.

1. AI Becomes the Ultimate Statician

One intriguing development in the sport-AI nexus is using live data to create news-style storylines. Instead of people looking up data on a spreadsheet or waiting for journalists to interpret the key moments of a game, content is generated automatically. That text can then be leveraged to create video and images. As long as the media is well-written and accurate, it will likely have a loyal audience.

The Six, built by WMT (a fan engagement tech company), uses AI and machine learning to create automated articles and game recaps written in the style preferred by individual schools. Arkansas, Clemson and Vanderbilt have all been beta customers. This evolution will likely push the market (including sports writers) to embrace AI. Services like The Six are already giving publishers an inexpensive way to get more content at consumers’ fingertips faster and better.

2. Smart Stadiums Go Ticketless

Stadiums are getting smarter. The latest innovations help management know who is attending their facilities and when. The Phillies, Giants, Astros and Nationals utilize “Go-Ahead Entry” facial recognition technology. Baseball fans who sign up for the program and have paid ahead can head straight to their seats without presenting a ticket. “This is an absolute game-changer,” says Giants CTO Bill Schlough.

In the NFL, the Cleveland Browns have started using lost-and-found technology in their smart stadium. The franchise estimates it receives over 100 claims of lost property per event. This solution gives real-time visibility into the stadium’s inventory of lost items and attendees’ claims. Run by the tech company Boomerang, the platform alerts potential matches to operations staff before reuniting people with their lost property.

3. Big Tech Plays Streaming Disruptor

Sports streaming isn’t new, but it’s set to become mainstream this year. Live sports had been the last refuge of cable TV, and now Amazon (Disclosure: whom we have a partnership with) is using it to aggressively drive its business forward with big NFL and MLB packages. The cord-cutting trend is only going to continue with the likes of Apple and Google, ready to take their own bites out of the market of the traditional media companies.

With competition, the value of sports rights continues to be astronomical. To spread the cost, Warner Brothers, Fox and Disney are combining all their sports properties and sports networks into one service. The joint venture is named Venu, but the industry is already tagging it “Spulu” or Sports Hulu, named after the model that put entertainment content from multiple networks on a single platform.

4. New Forms of Fan Engagement

Sports can be somewhat tribal, but building on that sense of community isn’t limited to stadium attendance. Digital platforms and content creation can also be used to drive greater fan engagement. For instance, the University of Maryland has partnered with the Sport & Story direct-to-consumer platform, which creates customized content for college athletic departments. Its free newsletter, the Terrapin Brew, delivers storytelling to fans via email. Sports & Story is also behind the WarEagle+ subscription service, which offers Auburn University fans behind-the-scenes video content.

Another engagement innovation occupies a different lane altogether. F1’s simulation racing arcade was originally launched in London but has now come to Boston and more locations across the United States (disclosure: F1 is a potential partner of Playfly Sports). Billed as a racing and social experience, the arcades are hosted in high-end bars. The experience is often compared to TopGolf. To borrow a line from the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl publicity, combining “sports, libations, and entertainment” will likely be a winner.

5. Data Powers Sport Marketing

Bringing Snoop on board for the Arizona Bowl is a testament to how data shapes marketing. There’s a significant overlap between sport and entertainment consumption, and the rapper is a true crossover artist. Our insights data has shown that over 80% of sports fans are also entertainment fans, so expect to see more celebrity tie-ins.

The need for granular fan data to allow marketers to better tailor campaigns will only grow in importance. For example, by using geo-location information and in-venue apps, marketers can personalize the fan experience by targeting specific fan segments and venues. For example, the company GeoSnapShot uses fan data and fan-submitted photos to drive more targeted advertising and engagement during the game. Sports betting is another area for fan data to excel. Not only in terms of marketing to fans, but companies like IC360 are using fan data to detect fan betting integrity and compliance issues for sports teams and leagues.

The Frictionless Fan Journey

Most of the trends in sports tech offer a parallel opportunity for brands to get their message across. Artificial intelligence and the evolution of smart stadiums are setting the stage for partnerships that will personalize the live sports experience to an unprecedented degree.

Meanwhile, the proliferation of content, and the ease with which it is generated, means fans can stay fully immersed with the fortunes of their teams. In effect, tech innovations are removing friction from the fan journey. Or, as the Giants CTO said of fans bypassing ticket queues, “You don’t even have to break stride.”

TouchTunes Teams Up with Lucra to Enable Bar Patrons to Compete with Each Other for Cash or Credit Prizes when Playing Electronic Darts

New capability coming to the TouchTunes app’s FunWallet will leverage Lucra technology to allow friends and rivals to challenge one another at darts to win cash or credits

NEW YORK - July 1, 2024 - TouchTunes Music Company, LLC (“TouchTunes”), North America’s largest in-venue interactive music and entertainment platform, today announces an exclusive partnership with Lucra, the leading technology provider of gamification services. Coming to millions of bar patrons across the country following the launch of FunWallet later this year, the exciting new mobile integration makes it fun, safe, and convenient for people playing darts or other bar games to challenge each other to win cash or credits, up-leveling their in-venue experience.

“We know many of our members already love to make a friendly wager for cash or drinks when they play bar sports like darts or pool. Partnering with an innovative technology company like Lucra allows us to elevate the in-venue experience with more fun and easy ways for people to connect and compete,” said Ross Honey, CEO of TouchTunes. “Engaged patrons play more and stay longer at their favorite bar or restaurant. So, by adding this new capability to FunWallet seamlessly within our massively popular mobile app, we are not only bringing joy to consumers but also driving growth and value for our operator customers and venue partners.”

Bar patrons will soon be able to take darts to the next level by challenging friends (or strangers!) to compete for real money or credits, whether they’re together in the same bar, or even miles away via remote-play on connected BullShooter dartboards. Lucra’s software, embedded within the TouchTunes FunWallet, will allow users to easily keep track of scores, win rates, earnings, and lifetime leaderboard stats, so they can always know who has ultimate bragging rights across all their favorite games.

“We’re thrilled to add Lucra’s gamification technology to the TouchTunes app, as we have a common belief in harnessing friendly competition and music to enable shared experiences that connect, energize, and inspire communities,” said Dylan Robbins, CEO of Lucra. “This partnership will allow millions more people to create memorable moments together by providing exciting new ways to compete with friends on the games we all love.”

Enabling peer-to-peer contests in the TouchTunes mobile app makes the whole experience safe and convenient. Lucra’s technology will be available in select markets, and provides responsible gaming capabilities that allow consumers to set limits and self-exclude. Users must be aged 18 or over to compete for cash or credits. The new social gaming feature will be coming to the TouchTunes mobile app so dart players can compete for real money or credits in the app while playing against each other on a BullShooter dartboard. Electronic darts contests in bars will be eligible in states across America following the launch of FunWallet in Q4 2024.

IC360 was named the Best in Sports Betting by the Sports Business Journal. The other nominees included FanDuel, DraftKings, ESPN BET, and Genius Sports.

IC360 was named the Best in Sports Betting by the Sports Business Journal. The other nominees included FanDuel, DraftKings, ESPN BET, and Genius Sports.

U.S. Integrity (Now IC360)

The company’s monitoring helped bring to light the betting incident involving the baseball coach at Alabama. U.S. Integrity announced a merger with Odds On Compliance in October and teamed with RealResponse on digital reporting tools. It partnered with the soon-to-launch TGL, the Big 12, SlamBall and others. It also was tapped by UFC to crack down on illegal betting (using the Prohibet product).

DraftKings

The company began turning a profit last year and passed FanDuel (briefly) in the third quarter for largest share of handle in the U.S. DraftKings launched a new streaming service and landed LeBron James as an ambassador, providing picks for NFL, college football and other non-NBA sporting events. It hired Marie Donoghue as chief business and growth officer (formerly at Amazon), as the company looks to expand its media reach. DraftKings’ deal with NASCAR gave it market access in North Carolina, and it opened sportsbooks at Wrigley Field and TPC Scottsdale.

ESPN Bet

ESPN’s collaboration with Penn National rolled out of the gate strong and was tripling the handle of predecessor Barstool Sportsbook in most states where it launched in November (started in 17 states). High-profile ESPN talent such as Scott Van Pelt and Elle Duncan signed on to be featured in ads. ESPN Bet bought WynnBet for market access in New York, and inked a deal with Quail Hollow Club (site of PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship) for North Carolina market access. It also became an NHL betting partner.

FanDuel

FanDuel maintained (for most of the year) its spot as the top sportsbook in terms of handle, as its parent company, Flutter, got listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company expanded in-play wagering options on the PGA Tour and established market access in North Carolina. FanDuel became co-exclusive sportsbook for MLB and brought former NFLer Rob Gronkowski back for Kick of Destiny 2 at Super Bowl LVIII. The brand also became NASCAR’s third official sportsbook.

Genius Sports

The company began integrating its BetVision product on more sportsbook apps to stream live games on those apps (Caesars, FanDuel and Fanatics use it). It rolled out the Dragon tracking system and other data-rich alternative streams for the Premier League, the NFL (on NFL+) and FIFA Women’s World Cup. FIBA added Genius’ Second Spectrum product for data. Genius also launched FanHub ID to help marketers and content owners build fan-based profiles.

Integrity Compliance 360 (IC360) Introduces Alert360 Platform for Anonymous Reporting

Through a continued partnership with RealResponse, Alert360 is a protected, secure communication platform for the sports betting industry.

Las Vegas, NV (May 28, 2024) – IC360, the unequivocal global leader in delivering best-in-class integrity and compliance regtech products and services for the sports betting and gaming sector, is pleased to announce its Alert360 platform, part of an ongoing partnership with RealResponse. The collaboration of these two industry leaders helps organizations navigate the many challenges in the ever-evolving sports betting space.

IC360 is committed to ensuring that players, coaches, trainers, and other individuals who have experienced threats of harm or who may have witnessed or are aware of unscrupulous behavior and actions, can report issues anonymously without fear of retaliation. Alert360 is easy-to-use with its versatile channel mix of QR codes, web forms, text messaging, and email. All communications are secure and private, and identities are fully protected throughout the reporting process and clarifying discussions. Information related to a complaint will only be made available to individuals who need it for investigation purposes.

With Alert360, organizations now have the unique ability to rebrand this anonymous, two-way integrity portal as their own. There are a couple of options for managing the portal: Outsource portal management to IC360’s trained professionals or select and task administrators within an organization to create a joint portal management process with IC360.

“The implementation of Alert360, powered by RealResponse, is another example of how we help our partners to stay one step ahead,” said IC360’s CEO Matthew Holt. “An anonymous tip can help limit and prevent acts or threats of physical and emotional harm or intimidation while thwarting attempts to undermine the integrity of sports competitions.”

IC360 and RealResponse are adding this new service to their growing portfolio of integrated sports betting integrity offerings, including:

  • In August 2023, the two companies launched a fully integrated service exclusive to intercollegiate athletics and free for RealResponse college sports customers to help protect student-athletes, as well as colleges and universities, from increased illegal gambling-related activity.

  • In May 2023, they launched “Athlete Alert Powered by RealResponse,” the only national tip line that allows the public to anonymously report gambling-related issues.

“It’s critical to offer new and innovative ways for people to share concerns without the fear of reprisal,” stated David Chadwick, Founder and CEO, RealResponse. “The rise of legalized sports betting has led to both expected and unexpected challenges. We simply cannot take chances when it comes to integrity, protecting our athletes, and ensuring competition remains free from manipulation or outside influence.”

SeventySix Capital Portfolio Company Lucra Partners with Dave and Buster’s to Gamify Its Customers Experience

SeventySix Capital Portfolio Company Lucra Partners with Dave and Buster’s to Gamify Its Customers Experience

Arcade giant Dave & Buster's is taking its games to a new level by offering social wagering on its app.

Customers can soon make a friendly $5 wager on a Hot Shots basketball game, a bet on a Skee-Ball competition or on another arcade game. The betting function, expected to launch in the next few months, will work through the company's app.

Dave & Buster's, started in 1982, now has more than 222 venues in North America, offering everything from bowling to laser tag, plus virtual reality. The company says it has five million loyalty members and 30 million unique visitors to its locations each year. The company's stock is up more than 50% over the past year.

As a boom in betting increases engagement among sports fans, digital gamification could have a similar effect within Dave & Buster's customer base by allowing loyalty members to compete with one another and earn rewards. Ultimately, it could mean people spend more time and money at the venues.

Dave and Buster's is using technology by gamification software company Lucra.

"We're thrilled to work with Lucra to bring this exciting new gaming platform to our customers," said Simon Murray, senior vice president of entertainment and attractions at Dave & Buster's. "This new partnership gives our loyalty members real-time, unrivaled gaming experiences, and reinforces our commitment to continuing to elevate our customer experience through innovative, cutting-edge technology."

Lucra, created in 2019 by then-Stanford Graduate School of Business classmates Dylan Robbins and Michael Madding, is a software platform that allows users to compete for real money on friendly competitions. Robbins and Madding previously worked together at Goldman Sachs.

"Lucra helps our partners drive user adoption, increase retention and engagement and add new monetization streams to their business," said Robbins, Lucra's CEO.

Robbins and Madding saw the incredible growth of legal sports betting, but sought to capitalize on the recreational wagers taking place between peers. The company has raised about $14 million with investors that include billionaire investor Marc Lasry, former and current professional athletes John Isner and Julie and Zach Ertz, along with the Raptor Group and SeventySix Capital.

"We're creating a new form of kind of a digital experience for folks inside of these ecosystems," said Madding, Lucra's chief operating officer. "We're getting them to engage in a new way and spend more time and money," he added.

Lucra says its skills-based games are not subject to the same licenses and regulations gambling operators face with games of chance. Lucra is careful not to use the term "bet" or "wager" to describe its games.

"We use real-money contests or challenges," Madding said.

Lucra's contests are only available to players age 18 and older. The contests are available in 44 states.

The social betting category is a $6 billion industry, according to gaming research firm Eilers & Krejcik. Several companies such as Fliff and ReBet have emerged, hoping to mimic the success of the gambling industry and capture a younger market.

Lucra recently signed a deal with Dupr, the pickleball ratings system, and TennisOne, a tennis app, to allow players to compete against one another for real money. Lucra's app has been downloaded 150,000 times, facilitated more than one million unique contests on the platform and collected more than $20 million of handle, according to the company.

"Whether you're playing pickleball with your friends or playing golf on the weekend, we help to amplify that and digitize that experience with our partners," said Robbins.

SeventySix Capital Portfolio Company Boomerang gives some Oak View venues a lost-and-found boost

SeventySix Capital Portfolio Company Boomerang gives some Oak View venues a lost-and-found boost

Lost-and-found tech company Boomerang started 2024 off strong with a $4.9-million seed round, backed by the likes of Drake and NFLers Odell Beckham Jr. and Christian Kirk.

Boomerang’s services may not touch all visitors of large-scale venues, but it can make a massive difference in guest experience. Without a clear industry standard -- paired with a lack of clear communication lines for many fans once they realize something is gone -- lost-item situations can often become a lose-lose for all.

Here's how it all works

Boomerang is a straightforward use case on both sides of the equation. For the venue employee responsible for logging items into the Boomerang database, entries are recorded with quick picture uploads. For frantically searching fans, a lost item claim can be filed to Boomerang’s website. That person will enter their name, the date they visited the venue and defining information and a picture for their lost item (like a phone with a cracked screen and a red case or a watch with a blue face and a brown band). Boomerang uses AI for image recognition and machine learning for text recognition. The tech works with similar speed to Shazam, Boomerang CEO Skyler Logsdon told SBJ. Philip Inghelbrecht, founder of Shazam, is the executive chairman for Boomerang.

Claim senders will either receive notification immediately that their item is in the Boomerang system or daily updates via email until their item is found. Those items can either be picked up at the venue or shipped. (Boomerang also handles the shipping labels for its clients.) Logsdon points out that Boomerang adds much more clarity to the process.

“Before, they weren’t talking about lost-and-found,” Logsdon told SBJ of previous options for venues. “They weren’t guiding anywhere. ... There was nothing. There was a Google sheet. There was a pen-and-paper log.”

Thirteen sports-related venues added in March

The company’s positive traction this year has developed into a growing connection with Oak View Group. More than a dozen OVG properties, such as the Findlay Toyota Center in Arizona, Acrisure Arena in California and Enmarket Arena in Georgia, use Boomerang as a provider (when Boomerang announced the addition of 13 sports-related venues last month, 11 were OVG-managed properties).

Those individual partnerships are providing such positive feedback -- both in rate of returned items to customers and user experience for the venue rep -- that OVG360 co-chairman Peter Luukko sees the potential for future implantation throughout its client ecosystem. “Early results are so strong that it’s something that certainly has legs within the company,” Luukko told SBJ.

Luukko, the longtime NHL executive with the Flyers and Panthers, said in his decades in the sports industry, a single lost-and-found approach never materialized as the go-to solution. That’s why from venue to venue, lost-and-found items might be held in the box office, guest services or security.

He learned about Boomerang through SeventySix Capital Managing Partner Wayne Kimmel, connecting with Logsdon near the end of last year. SeventySix Capital is an investor in Boomerang. A video call between the two resulted in a quick interest in the product for Luukko, enough so that it became a conversation topic with OVG regional leadership about implementing the technology around some venues.

On top of this growing OVG population, Boomerang has worked with Cleveland Browns Stadium, Nissan Stadium, State Farm Arena and large-scale venues like Universal Hollywood Studios.

Logsdon said a benefit of any multivenue system using Boomerang would be comparing the success rates of locations, breaking down why some have high marks of satisfaction and understanding why others may not be as accurate when trying to match items with owners. That early value for the OVG properties using the service -- Logsdon declined to share pricing -- is coming through to Luukko loud and clear.

“It’s an area that sort of hasn’t been given priority, traditionally, in our industry,” Luukko said of lost-and-found. “And one that now we seem to have a solution here.”
